What is a bridge rectifier?

A bridge rectifier is a circuit that uses four diodes to steer both halves of an AC waveform so the load sees a single polarity. In other words, it turns alternating current into pulsating DC without needing a center-tapped transformer. The diodes conduct in pairs, flipping the negative half-cycle so current flow through the load always goes in the same direction. Compared with a half wave rectifier, a bridge uses both half-cycles, giving higher average DC voltage and lower ripple voltage for the same line frequency. It doesn’t eliminate losses (two diodes are always in the conduction path) but it makes better use of the input waveform and improves output quality. A capacitor placed across the load resistor acts as a filter, smoothing the pulsating output into a more usable DC supply.

Ratings and Thermal Limits
Rectifier selection starts with voltage, current, and thermal limits. The peak reverse voltage rating must exceed the maximum AC input, including transients. Current rating must cover both steady-state load and startup surge. Inrush current, especially with large filter capacitors, depends heavily on transformer impedance and capacitance, so a single datasheet number doesn’t tell the whole story. Thermally, two diodes conduct each half-cycle, so the bridge loses roughly: P ≈ 2 × V_F × I_load This is a useful first estimate, not the final answer. Forward voltage varies with temperature and current, and capacitor-input supplies create high peak currents rather than smooth DC. That means real dissipation can be worse than expected. Don’t stop at steady-state calculations - repeated heating and cooling cycles can fatigue solder joints and internal connections, especially in high-power or poorly cooled designs.

Ripple, Efficiency, and Line Effects
For a capacitor-input filter, a rough estimate of ripple voltage is: V_ripple ≈ I_load / (fC) where f is twice the AC frequency for a full wave rectifier. This assumes relatively constant load current. Real loads are often dynamic, so measured ripple is usually higher. Efficiency depends heavily on output voltage. In low-voltage supplies, the fixed diode drop becomes a large percentage of the total output, which is why designers often use Schottky diodes or synchronous rectification in those cases. A bridge feeding a capacitor also does not draw a smooth sine-wave current from the source. It pulls current in short, high peaks. That creates harmonics, degrades power factor, and can introduce noise or stress upstream components. In higher-power systems, this behavior often drives the need for additional filtering or power-factor correction.
